Forming
ASTM A403 stainless steel can be cold worked and hot formed.
Cold working operations such as bending, drawing, and pressing are commonly used to shape the material.
In hot forming processes like forging or extrusion, careful temperature control is necessary to avoid cracking and ensure good grain structure and corrosion resistance.
Machining
ASTM A403 stainless steel can be machined using conventional methods such as turning, milling, drilling, and grinding.
Carbide tooling is recommended for machining operations.
Monitoring the speed, feed, and cooling fluid during machining helps prevent tool wear and maintains surface quality.
Welding
ASTM A403 stainless steel is readily weldable using common techniques such as TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), MIG (Metal Inert Gas), and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).
Preheating may be necessary in some cases, particularly for thicker materials.
Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) may be required depending on the grade and application to restore mechanical properties and minimize residual stresses.
Selection of filler materials should ensure compatibility with the base metal to achieve desired mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
Post-Weld Cleaning and Finishing
After welding, thorough cleaning of weld areas is necessary to remove any contaminants such as oxides, scale, or slag to avoid corrosion and improve aesthetics.
Surface treatments like passivation, pickling, or grinding may be applied to enhance corrosion resistance and remove surface imperfections.
Inspection and Quality Control
Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as visual inspection, dye penetrant testing, or ultrasonic testing are commonly applied to ensure weld integrity and compliance with ASTM A403 specifications.
Material verification and quality assurance processes help ensure that the fabricated parts meet all required standards and specifications.
