Welding and Fabrication

Welding

  • High Weldability: HASTELLOY® C-276 is highly weldable using common techniques like TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and Stick Welding (SMAW).
  • Matching Filler Metals: Matching filler metals (solid wires and coated electrodes) are available to ensure optimal weld quality.
  • Welding Guidelines: Standard guidelines should be followed for each welding process to maintain the alloy’s corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Fabrication and Forming

  • Mill Annealed Condition: Supplied in the Mill Annealed (MA) condition to optimize corrosion resistance and ductility.
  • Solution Annealing:

Temperature: 1121°C (2050°F).

Cooling: Water quenchingis recommended for thicker structures; rapid air cooling is feasible for thinner structures (<10 mm).

Hold Time: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on thickness.

  • Hot Working:

Processes: Can be hot forged, hot rolled, hot upset, hot extruded, and hot formed.

Temperature Range:

Start: 1232°C (2250°F).

Finish: 954°C (1750°F).

Moderate reductions and frequent reheating are advised for the best results.

  • Cold Working:

Characteristics: More energy is required compared to austenitic stainless steels due to higher stiffness and readiness to work harden.

Multi-Stage Forming: May require several stages of cold work with intermediate annealing.

Re-Annealing: Necessary after 7% or more outer fiber elongationto restore optimum properties.
