China’s steel exports saw a significant increase in August, with the country exporting 9.495 million tons of steel, marking a 21.3% rise from the previous month, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs. This increase represents a notable uptick of 1.668 million tons from July’s figures. For the year-to-date, China’s steel exports have reached 70.575 million tons, up 20.6% compared to the same period last year.
In contrast, China’s steel imports exhibited modest growth. In August, the country imported 509,000 tons of steel, an increase of 8,000 tons or 0.8% from July. From January to August, total steel imports amounted to 4.631 million tons, reflecting a year-on-year decrease of 8.4%.
The import of iron ore and its concentrates also showed a slight decline in August. China imported 10.139 million tons of iron ore, down 1.4% from the previous month. However, for the first eight months of the year, imports of iron ore and its concentrates totaled 81.495 million tons, an increase of 5.2% from the same period last year.
Coal and lignite imports decreased by 0.8% in August, with 4.584 million tons imported. Year-to-date figures indicate a total import of 34.162 million tons of coal and lignite, up 11.8% compared to the previous year.
